Inspired by every student whose told they can’t be an artist because it doesn’t “make enough money”.
oh hi zenpencils, I see you still assume that money to start business come from nowhere.
What if you need expensive medication so you don’t die?
This is a high-quality post by someone who has no idea what the fuck they’re talking about.
SPOILER: Your hopes and fucking dreams can’t pay your rent. They can’t pay your grocery bill. They can’t pay any medical expenses you may have. In the real world, your hopes and dreams amount to precisely DICK.
As a former art student talking to a current one, you have no idea how crippling the dept will be upon finishing/leaving school. Most art school students end up with severe depression and strong feelings of inadequacy because they didn’t realize how bad shit is.
Guess what? The animation industry doesn’t need you. Sorry. Oh? You want to get into comics? Well, let’s hope you have an interesting, unique, good looking, and consistently updating welcoming that people miraculously also find and keep reading, because the fucking big two don’t give a shit about you.
Oh, wait, you’re in game art/design? Oh. Rad. That changes NOTHING. Big developers are shutting down left and right. Hell, Irrational shut down last WEEK, with countless others before that.
Unless the thing you love more than anything else in the world is plumbing or electrical work, you’re gonna be stuck in a job you don’t enjoy with people you have to tolerate in order to fucking survive.
The best thing anyone can tell you is “life is NOT like a shonen manga, you don’t succeed just because you really want to”.
(P.S. thanks to Spike for that quote. She knows what’s up.)
Allow me to add this:
All is not lost, you starry-eyed Artist-Type Folks! You can still do what you love! Just don’t be a friggin’ dolt and blow everything ‘cause you chased a dream and Only that.
It’s true… Money (to an extent) Can’t buy “Happiness”. At least, not the metaphorical happiness that phrase refers to. Money Does buy everything else needed to survive - Food, Water, Shelter - and those extras that make life a little more comfortable.
My old boss used to tell me that “Money gave you Options”. What are those options? Well… chasing your dreams for one. I got crazy lucky and fell into a job I enjoyed. From that job, I made enough cash to spend time on my comics. Without that job, I doubt I’d be as far as I am with them or even still doing artwork period. Without that money, I had no options.
You Must Remember: Without Money, You Have No Options.
Don’t be a dolt. Get a job, earn that income, suffer if you must to pay your bills and not die. Once you got that down, you can come home and do what you love without blowing everything. If you’re proactive, work insanely hard at it and you’re lucky, you might just be able to make that money doing what you love. Hell, you might even be able to find a job that actually is what you’re passionate about instead of that dread 9 to 5 that you’re not too hot on! It is a possibility but Only if you have the money. Why? ‘Cause Without Money, You Have No Options..
Note that the advice I give comes from an outlier. I landed a minor tech job building websites and doing graphics for businesses in my damn-near-dead town By Chance. It’s location was close enough to my folks house that I simply stayed living with them. The advantage I had (and to a huge extent still have) is Insane. Even so, without the money I made there or the money I make now fixing computers/building websites/scrapping metals, I have no options.
Now go forth, get a job and make that money so you have the option to chase a dream.
